These rankings are a great advertisement for the winners, celebrating the most breathtaking spots on the globe. If it looks familiar, that's because it starred in the 2000 movie "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio. This cinematic fame turned it into a bucket-list destination for travelers everywhere.

But with great fame came a bit of trouble. At its peak, Maya Bay saw about 6,000 visitors a day, which took a toll on its delicate ecosystem. In response, the Thai government hit the pause button in 2018, closing the beach for some much-needed TLC. After a four-year hiatus, Maya Bay reopened in 2022 with strict new rules to keep it pristine: visitor numbers are capped at 375 per hour, and boats can't anchor directly in the bay. In Lonely Planet's 2024 beach rankings, Maya Bay is rubbing sandy shoulders with The Pass at Byron Bay in Australia (which took the top spot) and Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (a close second). This ranking not only highlights Maya Bay's unique charm but also cements its place among the world's top beach destinations.
