Ko Phi Phi Leh is the uninhabited jewel of the Phi Phi archipelago — the island of Maya Bay (of The Beach), the emerald water of Pileh Lagoon, and cliffs that fall straight into clear sea. There are no hotels and no roads; you visit by boat, and the best of it happens early, before the day-trip fleet arrives. Here are the eight things most worth doing, from the operator that plans its departures around exactly that. It’s about 1 hour 10 minutes by speedboat from Boat Lagoon Marina, and a national-park entrance fee applies on arrival.
1. Maya Bay — the reason everyone comes
Maya Bay is the amphitheatre of cliffs made famous by The Beach, and after its multi-year restoration it’s genuinely beautiful again — the reef is recovering and blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows most mornings. Access is regulated to protect the ecosystem, with periodic closures, so check current status when you plan. 2. Swim Pileh Lagoon
Pileh Lagoon is a sheer-walled inlet on the island’s east side where the water turns an almost artificial green. Boats idle in and anchor; you slip over the side and float in what feels like a flooded cathedral. Early or late it’s serene — mid-morning it’s a car park — so, again, timing is the trick.
3. See the Viking Cave
On the island’s north-east corner, Viking Cave is known for the wall paintings that gave it its name and for its birds’-nest harvesting, with bamboo scaffolding still visible inside. Landing is restricted, so you view it from the water as your boat passes — a short but genuinely interesting stop on the way into the lagoon.
4. Snorkel the clear water
The snorkelling around Phi Phi Leh is some of the Andaman’s most reliable: warm, clear water and busy reefs at spots like Maya Bay’s outer reef and Hat Yao. Expect clownfish, moray eels and — if you’re early and lucky — blacktip reef sharks, which are shy and harmless. Gear is provided on our tours, and calm mornings give the best visibility.
5. Kayak beneath the cliffs
The sheltered inlets around the island are perfect for a slow paddle — limestone walls above, clear water below, and angles on the scenery a big boat can’t give you. Kayaking features on several of our Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay itineraries; it’s the gentlest adventure on this list and one of the most memorable.
6. Dive the Bida Islands
Just south of Phi Phi Leh, the twin Bida islets (Bida Nok and Bida Nai) are the area’s standout dive sites — walls, soft coral and leopard sharks for the qualified, and shallow, friendly conditions off Bida Nok for less experienced divers. Serious wreck divers also rate the King Cruiser wreck, a large sunken ferry lying between Phuket and Phi Phi that dive boats pair with the Bidas.
7. Watch the climbers (or join them)
Phi Phi’s limestone draws rock climbers from all over the world, and several established local outfits run guided climbs with all equipment provided. Most routes are advanced, and in hot season the rock bakes — late-day climbs are kinder. From the water, the cliffs of Phi Phi Leh give you the spectator’s version: climbers picked out against the rock as you cruise beneath.
8. Add Phi Phi Don and the viewpoint
Phi Phi Leh’s inhabited sister island, Phi Phi Don, is where the beaches, restaurants and the famous viewpoint hike live — a roughly 30-minute walk up to a panorama over the twin bays of Ton Sai and Ao Lo Dalam. If your day allows, combining Leh’s scenery with an hour on Don rounds out the Phi Phi Islands properly.
