Tri Trang Beach — sometimes called Emerald Beach for its clear green water — is a small, peaceful cove just 5–10 minutes’ drive south of Patong. It’s the easy answer for anyone who wants Patong’s convenience without Patong’s crowds: a clean, calm beach with rentable sun loungers, kayaks and snorkel gear, and rocky reef patches at each end that hold coral and reef fish. To get there, follow the southern end of Patong’s Beach Road, turn at the Amari Phuket, pass Baan Yin Dee, and head down the road toward Tri Trang Beach Resort. Snorkelling is best at high tide, when visibility improves; the seabed is rocky in places, so water shoes are a good idea. It’s calmest in the dry season (November–April).
We’re based on the other side of Phuket at Boat Lagoon Marina, but our crews know the whole island’s coastline well, and Tri Trang is the spot we point friends to when they want a quieter swim near Patong. The trade-off worth knowing: there’s little natural shade on the sand, so bring a hat and sunscreen, and the rocky bottom that makes the snorkelling interesting is also why water shoes save your feet. Go in the morning or on a weekday and you’ll often have most of it to yourself.

Where is Tri Trang Beach?
Tri Trang sits on Phuket’s west coast immediately south of Patong, tucked between the headlands near Merlin Beach and Paradise Beach. It’s a small beach — roughly 700 m of sand in two sections divided by a rocky outcrop. Despite being so close to Patong’s nightlife and shopping, it feels separate and low-key — a short hop for a beach day, then back to town for dinner.

How to get there
- By taxi / tuk-tuk / Grab: 5–10 minutes from central Patong.
- On foot: about an hour’s walk along the coast from Patong if you fancy it.
- By car/scooter: head to the south end of Patong Beach Road, turn at the Amari Phuket, pass Baan Yin Dee, and follow signs to Tri Trang Beach Resort.

Snorkelling and swimming
The water is clean and emerald-clear, and the rocky sections at either end of the beach are where you’ll find coral and reef fish. Visibility is best around high tide; at low tide you may need to wade out further. Snorkel sets and kayaks are usually available to rent on the beach. Bring water shoes for the rocky entry.

What to expect
Tri Trang is about peace and quiet rather than facilities. There are a few beach bars and resort restaurants, sun loungers for hire, and not much else — which is exactly the appeal. There’s limited shade, so plan accordingly.
Best time to visit
The dry season (November–April) brings the calmest, clearest water. Green season (May–October) can bring surf and reduced visibility on Phuket’s west coast, so check conditions. Early in the day is quietest year-round.
Where to stay nearby
Tri Trang punches above its size for accommodation. The 5-star Rosewood Phuket (opened 2017) sits on the headland just south, and the Amari and Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach are a short way north toward Patong. Right behind the sand, the modest Tri Trang Beach Resort keeps things simple and affordable. Staying here gets you Patong’s convenience with a calmer stretch of beach on your doorstep.

Want to get out on the water?
Tri Trang is a lovely beach day, but if you’d like to see Phuket’s best water — the clear reefs and limestone islands that the west-coast beaches only hint at — that’s our world. Simba Sea Trips runs small-group and private boat trips from our Boat Lagoon base to Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi and the southern snorkel islands. Browse our boat tours, or if you want an easy, family-friendly reef day, see the southern-Phuket islands on our Coral Island options.
